Belgium Study Visa Process – A Comprehensive Guide

If you’re an international student aspiring to pursue higher education in Belgium for more than three months, obtaining a Type D student visa is a crucial step. This visa not only grants you the legal right to study in Belgium but also functions as a residence card, offering you the added benefit of unrestricted movement within the Schengen Area.

Step-by-Step Application Process

You must first be accepted into a recognized university in Belgium before applying for a visa.

Gather the following documents:

  • Passport (valid for at least 12 months)
  • Visa application form (filled and signed)
  • Proof of Admission from your university
  • Financial proof (around €803 per month)
  • Medical certificate
  • Proof of language proficiency (e.g., IELTS, TOEFL)
  • High school diploma and criminal record check (if over 21)
  • Supporting letter explaining your study choice

Schedule an appointment at your local Belgian embassy or consulate to submit your application.

You may be asked about your study plans and future goals during an interview at the embassy.

After submitting your application, wait for the decision, which typically takes 1 to 4 weeks, but may take up to 3 months during busy periods.

Upon arrival in Belgium, register at your local municipal office within 8 days to receive your residence card.

You must prove you can support yourself with €803 per month (or slightly more depending on the university). This can be shown via bank statements, family support, or scholarship funds.

Working : You can work 20 hours per week during the semester and full-time during breaks.
Family : You can bring your spouse and dependent children on a dependent visa.
Visa Duration and Extension
Your student visa is usually valid for 1-2 years and can be extended if your course lasts longer.
